Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) — the heart's classical guardian
The Arjuna tree has grown along the banks of Indian rivers for thousands of years. Its bark — thick, layered, and extraordinarily rich in bioactive compounds — has been harvested by Ayurvedic physicians since at least the 7th century BCE as the primary classical remedy for Hrid Roga, heart-related conditions, as documented in Charak Samhita's Chikitsa Sthana.
Modern phytochemical analysis has confirmed what those physicians observed clinically. The bark contains four primary classes of bioactive compounds, each contributing a distinct mechanism of action:
Triterpenoids (arjunolic acid, arjungenin, arjunetin)
The structural backbone of Arjuna's cardiac activity. Arjunolic acid in particular has demonstrated cardioprotective properties in multiple preclinical studies — protecting cardiomyocytes against ischemic damage, supporting mitochondrial function in cardiac cells, and modulating calcium ion flux across cardiac cell membranes. These are the compounds responsible for Arjuna's classical classification as a cardiotonic.
Ellagitannins (punicalagin, casuarinin)
High-potency antioxidants that provide direct oxidative protection to cardiac and vascular tissue. Ellagitannins have among the highest antioxidant activity of any known plant polyphenol class — substantially higher than commonly cited antioxidants like Vitamin C or green tea catechins. They protect cardiac cell membranes from lipid peroxidation and support the integrity of the vascular endothelium.
Flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol)
Support anti-inflammatory pathways and vascular health. Quercetin specifically has been studied for its ability to support healthy blood pressure by promoting endothelial nitric oxide production — a key mechanism in vascular relaxation and blood pressure regulation.
Cardiac glycosides (arjunoside I–IV)
The compounds classically responsible for Arjuna's toning effect on cardiac muscle tissue. These glycosides support the contractile capacity of the myocardium — the heart's pumping muscle — contributing to the improvement in exercise tolerance and reduction in breathlessness that users report with consistent use.
Together, these four compound classes create what modern pharmacognosy describes as a synergistic cardioprotective profile — and what Charak Samhita described, 2,500 years earlier, simply as Hridaya Rasayana.
